The Vindicator, March, 1978

Root -- Louise, daughter of Ernest and Marie (Gerber) Egli, was born Feb. 20, 1908, on a cold, stormy day at Bern, Kansas. The doctor, after leaving his buggy, walked on a mile through the storm to the Egli home to assist in the bringing forth of a tiny pound and a half baby daughter. Through the tender, loving care of this Swiss immigrant family, Louise lived to answer the call of Mama to 11 devoted children.

Louise's mother died when she was 3 years old, and much of her childhood was spent in the homes of other families. She moved with her sister's family to the state of Washington as a teenager, and there she grew to womanhood.

In 1928 she moved to California, where, on Jan. 20, 1934, she was married to a young widower, John Root. She went to his home to be his loyal wife and the mother to his 9 children; Lola, Mina, Elizabeth, Allen, Ruby, Mildred, Eldon, Adaline and baby Emmert. To this union were born 2 children, Ben and Betty.

There followed many happy years as the family grew under the strong parental influence of love, Christian principles and hard work. Prominent in all our lives was a strong Church fellowship for on Nov. 5, 1939, Mama and Daddy were baptized into the Old German Baptist Church, in which they were active and faithful until death.

After a few days of illness, the doctor suggested she go to the Memorial Hospital, Modesto, on Monday, Jan. 9, 1978, where it was determined that she was suffering from congestive heart failure. Place in the Intensive Care Unit, we visited her all that was permitted, and there, on Thursday morning, her daughters-in-law found her suffering a stroke. Mama never regained consciousness, and in the early morning hours of Saturday, Jan. 14, she crossed over the river of death to awaken to a new and eternal day in the presence of Jesus. How glorious! Her life on earth was 69 years, 10 months and 24 days.

Left with many good memories and the good example of a meek and virtuous life are her children,

Preceding her in death were her husband on Nov. 1, 1969; 2 step-daughters, Mina Andrews and Elizabeth Gish 1 great-granddaughter, Celia Bowman, 2 brothers, Ernest and Alfred Egli and 2 sisters, Ida Beaver and Lydia Anderson. "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints."

At 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17, funeral services were conducted at the Tuolumne meeting house by Brethren Harold Miller, Stanley Filbrun, and Daryl Landes. Bro Stanley's text was Heb. 13:14. Hymns used were 455, 456, and 463. At the Wood Colony Cemetery, where her body was laid to rest, we sang as the grave was being filled, hymns 460, 452, 433 and 451. Bro. Howard Oyler then gave us words of comfort and hope, concluding the service with prayer.
