Joseph Allen Root, son of Isaac and Melissa Higdon Root, was born April 30, 1867, at Ozawkie, Kansas, and departed this life April 30, 1943, aged 76 years.

He was married to Emma A. Bastin on February 20, 1889. To this union were born four sons: Thomas Christian, John James, Isaac William, and Fred Earl, and one daughter, Josephine, who died in infancy. His wife preceded him in death on September 7, 1941.

In his early years he pioneered in Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma, where he lived most of his life.

He was baptized into the Church of the Brethren in his youth, and in 1896, elected to the Ministry and several years later ordained to the eldership, in which office he has so faithfully served with great zeal and earnestness. His early ministerial work was spent in evangelistic work. In 1925 he became a charter member of the Dunkard Brethren Church to which he devoted his untiring efforts and love for the work of the church.

He, with his wife, moved to Waterford in Dec., 1928, where he has since lived.

One week before he was removed to the hospital, he called for the anointing service which was administered.

His life long devotion and love for the Church and his patience in suffering will be a loving remembrance to those he has left, and his desire and longing to meet those who have gone on, attest to the hope that he had within him.

Grandpa leaves to mourn his departure, his four sons, 37 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 2 sisters, Retta Switzer, and Seltha Brimacombe, and a host of friends and relatives.

Funeral services were held on Monday P.M., May 3, 1943 at the Sovern Funeral Home, Modesto, California by Elder C. J. Rumble of the Old German Baptist Church, and Elder M. S. Peters of the Dunkard Brethren.

Internment was made in the Wood Colony Cemetery.

ROOT-In Modesto, April 30th, Joeseph Allen Root: father of T. C. Root of Perue, Ind., John Root of Empire, William Root of Great Bend, Kans., and Fred Root of Waterford. Also Survived by 3* grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. A native of Kansas, age 76 years.

Friends are invited to attend funeral services Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the *OVE*N Funeral Home Internment, Wood Colony Cemetery.
