Benjamin Byerly

Benjamin F. Byerly, 61, Greeley, professor of history at the University of Northern Colorado, died Friday, July 6, in London.

He was born July 27, 1929, in Elk City, Okla.

Mr. Byerly moved to southern Colorado with his family. He attended Fowler High School and La Junta and Pueblo junior colleges. He received his undergraduate degree from Kansas State Manhattan.

He served in the U.S. Air Force for three years in Germany. He then attended the University of Illinois where he received his master's and Ph.D. degrees in English constitutional history. He taught for three years at Washington College in Chestertown, Md., before coming to UNC in 1963.

He also had been an external editor of the Public Records Office in London and spent part of his summers there for the past 22 years.

He was a member of Phi Alpha Theta, the history honorary fraternity, and was elected a member of the Royal Historical Society of England in 1977. He was the recipient of research grants from the American Philosophical Society and the National Endowment for the Humanities. He had edited two volumes of 13th-century English wardrobe and household accounts fox the Public Records Office.

Survivors are his wife, ; two daughters, ; four sons, ; four sisters, Mary Enos of Firestone, Lida Chapman of Salt Lake City, Utah. , ; two brothers, John of Canon City, . Two sisters are deceased.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the University Center Panorama Lounge. Memorial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church.
