Michael HOBACK ⁶⁹¹

  General Notes:

MICHAEL HOBACK, a farmer and a prominent citizen of Prairie Township, was born January 25, 1827 his parents were John and Dorcas (Killen) Hoback, the former of German and the latter of English descent. Michael received a limited education, his father dying when our subject was ten years old. When four years old, he, with his parents removed to Johnson County, Ind., where they went through many of the hardships of pioneer life. He was married, June 1, 1548, to Miss Elisabeth J. Hall, daughter of John Hall, of Kentucky. They have had twelve children, eight of whom are still living. In 1850 he went with his family to Pulaski County, Ind., remaining there two years, end then moved to Howard County. He farmed there till 1860, when he finally located on the farm he now owns. It was then a wild, swampy district, but he now has 115 acres under cultivation. He has had his experience of settling in a new county, having had to work for 50 cents a day, and pay 80 cents per bushel for meal. When he married, he was obliged to get into debt for a few articles to start housekeeping with. He and his wife have been members of the Methodist Episcopal Church for over thirty years. Mr. Hoback is a Republican, and cast his first vote for Fremont in 1856. ⁶⁸⁷
