JOSEPH HER RICK, Esq. ; d. Sep. 17, 1820; he rem. from Methuen, Mass., to Lewiston, Me., in 1772, and from thence to Green, Androscoggin co., Me., in 1780. Tradition says he exchanged his farm in Lewiston for the one he occupied in Green with one Thomas Taylor, whose descendants still live on the place in L., though the house does not now stand where the one did which Mr. Herrick occupied. His farm in Green was a large one, and was well cultivated, and connected with it was a tannery and a saddler's and harness-maker's shop. He was also a justice of the Peace, before whom were tried and adjusted all petty differences in the vicinity. He also kept an inn, or public house, being on the main stage road between Portland and Augusta. He took great pains in the cultivation of fruit trees, introducing many varieties of choice apples previously unknown in that section. He also erected a cider mill, in which was manufactured all the cider of his townsmen. He was the first one to introduce the Spanish Merino sheep in the State of Me. ⁴⁸³

Joseph married Mary PRESTON, daughter of Samuel PRESTON and Elizabeth SCALES, on 17 Oct 1775 in Wilmington, Middlesex, Massachusetts, USA.⁴⁸¹ (Mary PRESTON was born on 14 Apr 1747 in Wilmington, Middlesex, Massachusetts, USA and died on 16 Aug 1820.)
