Obituary From The Gospel Messenger Sep 3, 1898:
Emmert, Joseph H. At Altamont, Labette, Kansas, Aug 5, 1898, Joseph H. son of Jonathan and Lydia Emmert, deceased, aged 41 years. The subject of our notice was threshing and, while on the engine, tightening the large belt, was thrown between the wheels, causing his death in a few seconds. He leaves a wife, son and daughter, and one sister. J. A. Byerly.

SAD ACCIDENT

With sorrow we chronicle the sad and sudden death of Mr. Joe Emmert, last Friday. Just after dinner he mounted his threshing engine, playfully waved his hand to his wife who was standing in the door, and ran off to hitch to the thrasher for an afternoons thrashing at his own place. Somehow in putting on the belt he was caught by the belt wheel and drawn in between it and the boiler, crushing his body into a space not more than 2 1/2 or 3 inches wide. He said: "Take me out boys, I am killed". He was at once released but died in fifteen minutes.

A large concourse of friends followed his remains to the cemetery at Altamont on Sunday, although the day was a rainy one. Mr. Emmert we hear spoken of as an excellent man and a kind and good neighbor. Our hearts are all touched by these strange vistations of providence; and we sympathize deeply with the sorrowing family. A minister from Edna preached the funeral discourse.
