President's Message
I would like to thank everyone who came out to the Work Day & Steak
Fry, especially those who cooked, bagged rocks & worked on crafts!!!
We have a good supply of rock bags filled, and crafts for the wheel,
but I want to encourage everyone to finish the crafts they have started
or planned at home. We want to have an ample supply & variety of crafts
to keep everyone interested and willing to spin the wheel.
I want to ask everyone to come to the show and help any way they can,
because there is a lot of work involved and we can trade off assignments
so no one is overworked & cause health problems. Even if you can't
stand long we can use you where you can sit and make change or other light
work.
Sincerely.
Darrel Bolinder
President
Tooele Gem & Mineral
Subject: Minutes for August 2000
Place: At The Steak Fry
Time: Aug. 12th 2000
The meeting was called to order by Darrel Bolinder. He thanked everyone
for coming out & working so hard for making this such a fun & productive
day. We finished around 1100 Grab Bags & numerous crafts.
It was brought up it was time to renew our food handlers permits. The
servers do not need to get one, but the people back in the kitchen do.
If you need to find out if it applies to you call Ruth Smith. The class
for the food handlers permits will be on Sept. 5th at 6:00 PM.
Dennis Chapman will be going to Quartzsite this winter to help his mother
& will have a problem getting the newsletter out. He needed someone
to do the copying & mailing or a laser printer so he could do it down
south, it was approved that he get the printer.
It was proposed that the club donate $500 to Muscular Dystrophy, after
some discussion it was approved.

Dennis Chapman
Note: I lost my recorder & had to do the minutes from memory
& the memory of the folks back at camp. Sorry if I forgot anything!!!
Members News
Our Show:
We need help setting up on Thur. Sept. 21st, we usually get started
after the electricity is wired. The kitchen needs cookies, cakes &
pies (oh my). The silent auction needs good rocks with prices marked &
broken geodes for the kids. We also need door & wheel prizes, but most
of all we need you!!!
Moab Show:
I just talked to Dean & cleared up some confusion we have been
having. There is no set numbers on what we need to do, we just need to
do what we can to help. There will be all the clubs from Utah & two
from Colorado will be supporting the show. Moab is a small club & if
we ALL do some, it won't be such a burden on the few.
School Assemblies:
I'm afraid I might forget this before the next meeting. I was wondering
if it would be possible when we do the school assemblies this year, if
we could video tape it. It would make a good addition to our club library
and a great reference for the members in future presentations.
Utah Clubs Web Sites:
There has been quite a few clubs going on line, here is a list of the
ones I know of here in Utah. All have links from our club site. If you
hear of anymore please let me know.

Tooele Gem & Mineral Soc.

(I have no idea when netscape is going to change our web address. They
were going to do it 4 months ago, and there is no way I can talk to anyone.
I guess that's what I get for using a free service.)

Utah USGS Quad Maps:
I have found a site where quad maps of Utah are available. It is at:
http://161.119.67.17/gisdata/www/arcinfo/
Fun Online Adventure game:
I found a fun program called Quandary that creates adventure games
for web sites. I think this would be fun for the kids corner in our club
site. I have Rocky Rockhound working his way through mazes in the newsletter,
why not make an adventure for him on the club web site. It is like a mutable
choice quiz & each choice give you a new situation, imagine you see
an apple up in a tree but don't know which branch or combination of branches
will get you there. Each fork in the tree is a situation & each branch
a choice. You can even have or find useful things on the trip. Lets put
our heads together & have some fun, we can make it fun and/or even
educational, you can even send funny fieldtrip stories & I’ll try &
work them in.
Lapidary Digest Search Engine:
Lapidary Digest is a Internet mailing list where people ask questions
& share answers, this has been going on for several years & have
put the past issues into a little program. It works with MS Dos & Windows
95/98. I have downloaded & tried out the program, it has 1 bug in it
that I have found, but is a GREAT resource for about any question about
lapidary work & best of all it's free!!! If there is time I’ll try
and demo it at the September Meeting, let me know if you will want a copy.
Editors Hall of Fame:
One of the members of the Wasatch Club entered my name in the Editors
Hall of Fame contest. I would like to thank that person & feel VERY
HONORED for being considered!!! Confused yes, there are several other clubs
I exchange with that I think do a better job than me. With my disability
I have trouble understanding the forms & rules, so I never entered
the contests. I would like to thank the club for letting me use them as
my guinea pig for my desktop publishing hobby & giving me a feeling
of self worth.
