November 2000

President’s Message

Well the show & elections are over for the year.

I would like to thank everyone for their help at the last meeting with the election and other business. We discussed fieldtrips & rocks needed for grab bags, so lets think about the places to get what we need, and make arrangements (where necessary), then plan trips to these areas.

Some of you will be gone to Quartzsite before the next meeting so have a safe trip & an enjoyable winter.

Sincerely,
Darrel Bolinder
President
Tooele Gem & Mineral
Subject: Minutes for October 2000
Place: Tooele Senior Citizen Center
Time: Oct. 10th, 2000
The meeting was called to order by Darrel Bolinder & he welcomed everyone out to the meeting. Dennis then read the minutes for September. There were 2 correction, it wasn’t approved that we change the 2 year limit for elect officers, but to check into bylaws so we can vote on it. And the other correction was Dorothy Imlay donated the 2 cases. After some discussion the minutes where then approved. Donna then read the treasurer’s report, before expenses for the show: the kitchen made $2,203.50, the door $653, grab bags $506.68, sawdust $191.05, wheel $501.90, popcorn $92, silent auction $93.73. The treasurer’s report was then approved.

There was some discussion on what should be done at the next show (mostly what the city needs to do). Darrel read some thank you letters. Ardith Higley said someone left a baking pan at the show & thanked everyone for helping in the kitchen. Dennis has a new toll free fax/voicemail number so if anyone needs to contact him this winter they can contact him there. We will no longer be able to put our sign across Main St. because they are going to pull out the poles & we also discussed about other signs, and fliers. There was some discussion about fieldtrips.

The Nominating Committee of Bob Titus, Donna Chavez & Ruth Smith came up with the Elected Officer list. Donna Chavez for President, Bob Kirby for Vice President, Larry Wilson for Secretary, and Larry Higley for Treasurer. It was asked if there was anyone else who wished to run for each position, there was no other volunteers so the members on the list were elected by acclamation. The club gave a round of applause for the Elected Officers & the Officer to be.

There was discussion on what it will take to change the bylaws to extend the terms a Elected Officers. Because of the complicated way it is worded, it was tabled to a later time. I missed who won the door prize (sorry), the meeting was then adjourned.

While The Editor Is Gone:
I have upgraded my voice/fax service (no more extension). While I’m gone you can reach me at *********. Unless it hears a fax machine it work like an answering machine & then pages me on the web. If you have an article or hear of a member going in the hospital or a death you can call or fax that number, or e-mail or mail me, which ever works best for you. The first part of November my new address will be:
Dennis Chapman

Also I am getting quite a few articles that I’m not going to be able to put in our newsletter so if you want to e-mail me at with the subjects you are interested in, and I’ll e-mail them back to you. I am also hoping to get them burned onto a CD when I get back & maybe get the back issues of the Strata Gem included, and get it in the club library.
I’m looking forward in seeing everyone in April!!!

Club Fieldtrips:
I was caught red faced at the last meeting. I mentioned we should have 6 places to go on fieldtrips & go on 3 each year & 3 the next, but someone asked what & where they are & caught me off guard. Ok I have 12 files with these on them: Agate, Chert, Petrified Wood & Jasper in Wayne County, Belemnite Fossils near Vernal, Wendover Agate, Topaz Mt., Sun Stone & Obsidion near Delta, Shadow Agate & Petrified Wood near Eureka, Red Moss Agate near Fremont Jct., Geodes & Topaz near the Thompson & Dugway Range, Honey Onyx near Nephi, Trilobites in Millard County, Onyx up Mt. Nebo Scenic Loop, Obsidian 45 miles South of Delta, Horn Corals Crinoids & Brachiopods in the Lakeside Mountains in Tooele County, Ammonites in Emery Co, Brochantites near Milford. Now with the rash of new wilderness land I don’t know which are still open & some of the maps only get you in the general area. I will print them up & put them in the library (due to Dave’s health problems he might need some help getting the library to the meetings), & I can e-mail or throw them up on the web someplace if you need. If you have any other locations to add please send them to me!!!

New Computer CD:
I just received a CD from an editor in New York State. It contains a 390 page PDF document on thundereggs & the reader program (if you don’t already have it on your computer). It contains locations, photos, and how to find, dig, orientate & cut, and read topographical maps.
