Helping Children Understand Crystals

The word Crystal comes from the Greek word for ice, because the ancient Greeks believed that Quartz crystals were made from water which had frozen solid and would not melt.

Some crystals form from molten magma, while others form from dissolved minerals in a solution.

When they are given enough time to form the atoms of a crystal stack neatly together, like a pile of building blocks.  If they are not given enough time to form, like when a piece of lava lands in the water, the atoms harden wherever they are in a lump, like a pile of dumped blocks.

Also important is the room they have to grow in.  If the rock cavity is big enough they grow into a fine crystal.  If they don't have enough room to crow they fill up the space and take on the shape of the cavity.  Sometimes two crystals will grow into each other and it looks like one is sticking through the other.
