by Winfred S. Haynie, on February 6, 1970, at 2:00 p.m., in the Manassa-Romeo Wards Chapel, in Manassa, Colorado (Obituary by Chris N. Harmsen)
Alma C. Nielson was born on September 11, 1881, and he died on February 3, 1970, in the Willowcrest Nursing Home in Monte Vista, Colorado, after a lingering illness.
I pray for divine guidance today, that my thinking and my choice of words will be wise. I want to say that which is appropriate and I want to deliver a true message. All of us here today realize that our call is not far away, and we must ask ourselves whether we have been ready, whether we are now ready, and whether we are willing to get ready now, by putting our lives in order.
Al Nielson and I were close neighbors during the years 1927 thru 1930. It was during this time that I learned of his industry, thrift and hard work. Al and Tea, as they were known by those who loved and knew them best, were up early and worked late. I would notice their lights on each morning hours before daybreak. They worked hard to provide for large family, and to teach their family industry and thrift.
If I were to make a list of honorable, honest men in business, the name of Alma C. Nielson would be among the first. After he had sold and delivered his lambs, wool and other products, each year, he would make rounds the day that he received payment, and would pay all of his obligations. He enjoyed getting out of debt, that he could be free and that he could please his creditor-friends.
When the sadness of death comes to loved ones and friends, we would like to help, but we all feel so inadequate. But we can, and do, express our friendship, and we can exercise our faith and prayers. We would like to do more. But, we all understand that God governs death. "The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away.
I have mentioned Al's good wife, Tea, the mother of his children. She was such a helpmate, loyal and true, until her death. I would like, also, to mention his wife. Philomena. She gave him love, kindness, care, thoughtfulness, and companionship, when he needed it. She was with him in joyous times, and in times of sickness and death in his own family. To me, this has been marvelous. He appreciated and loved her. And all of the community loved and enjoyed her.
And, during his illness, we have all been impressed by the love and care given by his children, step-children, grand-children and others, Those who helped will always be glad they did, for they all know that Al loved and enjoyed all of them..
We are here today as Christians. We believe in God and in his son, Jesus Christ. From John 14:11, we read the words of Jesus, who said, "He that bath my commandments and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me; and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father." Throughout the entire world, people listen to words of and about the Lord, Jesus Christ, There are discourses by men and women who believe Jesus was a great teacher; and by others who do not receive his as a Son of God. However, all Christian teachings about Jesus Christ should teach that He is a literal Son of God and that He is, in very deed, our Redeemer.
We will either love the Lord in our mortal lives, or we will ignore the commandments and show contempt by our disobedience. May we be true and faithful and be thankful for our many blessings, I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
The remarks above by Winfred S. Haynie were assembled from notes in his personal files by his son, Donald L. Haynie. Winfred S. Haynie passed away on February 18, 1985, in his home in Provo, Utah, where he had lived for about ten years, after moving from his life-long home in Manassa, Colorado.
