by Winfred S. Haynie, on September 20, 1968, at 2:00 p.m., in the Manassa-Romeo Wards Chapel, in Mantissa. Colorado (Obituary by Wayne Rogers)
Sadie Chapman was born in Sanford, Colorado, on April 14, 1891. She died in a nursing hose in Salt Lake City, Utah, on September 16, 1968, after a lingering illness.
There is a good spirit here today. We are sad but we know we are blessed. I pray for a continuance of divine inspiration. We are sad at her passing, her family will always feel a need for her, but we are happy that she has been relieved of her suffering. From Ecclesiastes 3:14, we are taught by the Preacher, son of King David, that, "I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be forever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him.' This means to me that God does not create to annihilate or destroy us. or that we are to live only a short time between eternities. Our bodies have been given to us for a definite and eternal purpose. We are instructed by the Lord in D&C 88:14-15 that, 'Now, verily I say unto you, that through the redemption which is made for you is brought to pass the resurrection from the dead. And the spirit and the body are the soul of man." The Lord further teaches us in D&C 33:33-14 that, "For man is spirit. The elements are eternal, and spirit and element, inseparably connected, receive a fullness of joy; and when separated, man cannot receive a fullness of joy."
All individuals, upon death, go to the spirit world. When Alma reproved his son, Corianton, for his sinful life (Alma 40:4-7,9,11), he told his that the same attitude of mind and habits of thinking go with us after death. We cannot take a chance and wait to change our lives for the better after we die. We must learn all we can and gain experiences as planned for us. This prepares us to be able to learn faster after this life. We are here to prepare a firm foundation for everlasting life. Brigham Young has said that, after we are resurrected, we will learn 1,000 times more in 1,000 times less time. I calculate that the learning of 77 years (the length of Sister Chapman's life), will be done, after resurrection, in 41 minutes.
We need not be concerned about the resurrection of body and the return of the spirit to it. Resurrection will come to all. Acceptance of the Gospel determines the time of resurrection and the nature of the judgment that follows.
The Lord has said, “This is ay honor and my glory, to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man." The Plan of Salvation, the Gospel, is given to us by God. It has been restored in its fullness, in this last dispensation. We are here for our eternal salvation. The Fourth Article of Faith states that, "We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, faith in the Lord, Jesus Christ; second, repentance; third, baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; and, fourth, laying on of hands for the Gift of the Holy Ghost.' These are everlasting and eternal principles and ordinances, and are not just for convenience only. We build faith by study, prayer, and righteous living. Repentance is a continual process; our sins are remitted as often as we truly repent. One baptism by proper authority is all that is needed. And, when we receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost, we are given the Holy Ghost as our companion, protection, and help, if our faith and repentance are foremost in our lives.
We have been taught the Gospel in its fulness. We have an opportunity to build our lives on a firm foundation. We are instructed in Luke 6:47-49 that, "Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whoa he is like: he is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock, But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great."
The remarks above by Winfred S. Haynie were assembled from notes in his personal files by his son, Donald L. Haynie. Winfred S. Haynie passed away on February 18, 1985, in his home in Provo, Utah, where he had lived for about ten years, after moving from his life-long home in Manassa, Colorado.
