by Winfred S. Haynie, on May 21, 1963, at 2:00 p.m., in the Manassa-Romeo Wards Chapel, in Manassa, Colorado (Obituary by William M. Christensen)
James D. Chapman was born October 12, 1886, and died in Veterans Hospital, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on May 18, 1963, at 6:30 a.m. He had been ill since January 6, 1963.
As I stand before you, and before the body of Brother Chapman, I think of the Council in Heaven when the plan was considered for creation of the Earth, and for the growth and advancement of the spirit children of God. This is the second time in a little more than a month that I have viewed a flag-draped casket of one who, with millions of others, answered the call to serve his country, even if it meant giving his life, if required, that loved ones, neighbors and friends might be free, I feel small and insignificant and pray for inspiration.
I have known Jim Chapman all of my adult life, and I took him for granted. Since he became ill, I have been aware of the many prayers and administrations in his behalf. But, the Lord had other plans. From Isaiah 55:8-9, we learn, "For my thoughts are Oct your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts."
I served with Jim on the Stake Sunday School Board from 1950 until 1953, and we traveled together three Sundays each month, and I was impressed by his preparation and contributions.
We are saddened by his passing, but should be happy with the monument for good that he has left. He always magnified the good in people, not the bad.
We are all here in this life to grow and improve, and all of us must work at repentance. Jim had his weaknesses, too, and he tried to improve. Jesus was our example and, in Matthew 23:13, he taught, "But woe unto you scribes and pharisees, hypocrites, for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in," Jim Chapman was a mild-mannered man, but a strong man who wanted always to obey the commandments of the Lord.
We learn from Ecclesiastes 3:14 that, "I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be forever: nothing can be put to it, nor anything taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear him." This means to me that God does not create to annihilate and destroy us. At this time, there is a popular doctrine being taught that we live only a short time between eternities, but this is not true. We are given our bodies for a definite and eternal purpose.
Jesus Christ atoned for all of us, that we might be resurrected from physical death. If that is all we want, the reuniting of body and spirit, we need do nothing. However, if we want more, salvation from spiritual death, we must do much more, because much is expected of us.
We have our free agency. But, God cannot do it all for us. We can control our spiritual resurrection. Resurrection of the body comes to all men, but acceptance of the Gospel determines the time of resurrection and the nature of the judgment which accompanies it.
The remarks above by Winfred S. Haynie were assembled from notes in his personal files by his son, Donald L. Haynie. Winfred S. Haynie passed away on February 18, 1985, in his home in Provo, Utah, where he had lived for about ten years, after moving from his life-long home in Manassa, Colorado.
