ORA MARTIN THROWN FROM A HORSE, SUSTAINS FRACTURED SKULL A telephone message from Richardson to Matthias Martin of that place who happened to be in Moab, and Ranger Ed Taylor also in Moab, Tuesday brought the word that Ora, the nine-year old daughter of Mr. Martin had been thrown and dragged by a horse and was seriously injured.
Mr. Martin, Mr. Taylor and Dr. Williams left for Richardson at once.
Later reports from Richardson are to the effect that the little girl's skull was badly crushed and she had to be taken to Salt Lake City to undergo an operation. Dr. Williams and members of the family accompanied her to that place.
2. Medical, 4 Mar 1910, Richardson, Grand, Utah, USA. 249 Grand Valley Times Page 1 ORA MARTIN RECOVERING Dr. J. W. Williams returned on Monday from Salt Lake City, where he had assisted with an operation on Ora Martin of Richardson. The little girl's only serious injury consisted of a crushed skull. At the time the accident occurred a broken bone had cut an artery. The raising of the crushed skull allowed this wound to bleed profusely. This was soon stopped however.
The operation was performed by Dr. George S Harding. Five pieces of the skull were raised from the brain or entirely removed. The indenture was so large and deep that a child's hand could have been placed in it. The effect of the injury was to interfere materially with the child's speech. Since the operation her speech is retuning. The operation was quite successful and the little girl was much improved when the doctor left Salt Lake City three days later. He expects her to be able to come home in about a month. Matt Martin and wife and Miss Minnie Martin accompanied her to Salt Lake. The operation was performed at the L. D. S. hospital.
Dr. Williams says the child did not receive her injuries by being thrown from a horse. She led a horse to water and it is supposed that the horse shied and dragged her by the halter rope, striking her head on a rock. She was found lying on the rock pile in a semiconscious condition, when her parents growing uneasy at her failure to return from the watering place went to hunt for her.
