YOUTHFUL DESPERADOES ARE CAPTURED
STOLE A COUPLE OF HOURSES IN SALT LAKE AND HEADED NORTH.
They Are Surprised and Arrested by Sheriff Bailey at Ogden Hot Springs.
Last evening at about 7:15 o'clock Sheriff Bailey arrested a couple of desperate horsethieves at the Utah Hot Springs. Late in the afternoon the Sheriff had been notified by the Salt Lake officers to intercept a couple of horsethieves that were headed this way. Sheriff Bailey and Deputy Sheriff Belnap went to work upon the case immediately. Deputy Belnap struck the trail of the desperadoes at Riverdale and followed it through the city, the trail leading up Thirty-first street to Monroe avenue, and then over to and down Twentieth street to Washington avenue, thence north. Sheriff Bailey, who had been to the road in the western part of the county, returned and met Belnap, and then it was decided the Sheriff would go to the Hot Springs and intercept the men, and his deputy was to follow their trail through Harrisville and Farr West.
Bailey arrived at the Spring on the motor at about 7:13 o'clock, and within a few minutes the horsethieves were seen coming. The Sheriff concealed himself back of a coal shed, and within a few minutes the clatter of the horses' hoofs and laughing and talking of the men were heard. When within a few feet of the shed Sheriff Baily stepped out and covered the men with a revolver, commanding them to throw up their hands. The men were so surprised that the command was quickly obeyed. The sheriff then relieved the men of their revolvers and handcuffed them.
The work of surprising and capturing the desperadoes was witnessed by a several people at the Springs, and by a large number of people on the Oregon Short Line train.
Upon the arrival of Deputy Belnap, the men were brought to Ogden and lodged in the county jail. They gave their names as Richard Baker and John Orsel, aged 19 and 20 years respectively. They are typical Jesse James boys, one having long, black hair, and is short in Statue. The other is a tall raw-bone fellow, with red hair. When searched they were found to have a couple of 38 revolvers, two pair wire cutters, used for going through barb-wire fences; a compass, a hunting knife, drinking cup, a couple of red handkerchiefs and a number of other trinkets, among which were a couple of U.S. detective badges. When places in the county jail last night, the two men were fined 13 cents each by the Kangaroo court for breaking into the jail so late at night.
The offices at Salt Lake have been notified and the men were taken there this afternoon and the charged of grand larceny registered against them.
